Public Adjusters

Module 4, Lesson 5

When to Involve Them & How to Work Together

What is a Public Adjuster?

Licensed professionals who represent policyholders

Unlike the insurance company's adjuster who works for the carrier, a public adjuster works for the homeowner.

When Public Adjusters Add Value

Best For:

  • Larger, complex claims
  • Overwhelmed homeowners
  • Difficult adjusters/carriers
  • Known underpayment issues

Less Valuable For:

  • Small, straightforward claims
  • Claims already paying full value
  • Simple, quick settlements

The Math Example

$30,000 claim where insurance offers $20,000

Without PA

$20,000

What insurance offered

With PA

$26,000

$30K settlement - $4K fee

Working with Public Adjusters

Working with Public Adjusters (Continued)

Even with a public adjuster, don't cut corners.

Referring Homeowners to PAs

Can be a win-win situation:

Homeowner gets representation. PA gets a client. You get a larger settlement for your work.

Be careful about referral arrangements:

Some states prohibit referral fees from PAs to contractors. Can create conflicts of interest.

Watch Out For...

Not all public adjusters are equal. Your interests should be aligned.
